Oppo likes pictures of fast cars stuffed with expensive booze, right? Good. I made a Bevmo run today, because in the 911e46z06 family, it just ain’t Thanksgiving until someone breaks a pool cue over an uncle’s head.
So far I’ve sampled the Caldera Ashland Amber, the Mother Earth Cali Creamin’, and the Ballast Point Calm Before the Storm. Now I’m enjoying a glass of Tres Manos Anejo (which I believe to be the second best tequila in the world). How about ya’ll?

I don't drink.

I’m drinking a glass of white wine right now.

Right now, I’m giving Yuengling’s new IPL a try. Definitely drinkable, but not sure I’ll buy it again.

I’m drinking Founder’s Backwood Bastard. It’s fine, but a bit thick and heavy for my tastes.

Bell’s Winter White Ale.
Most of the time, I don’t expect Winter ales to be wheat ales. But it’s tasty.

I’m not a fan. Maybe I need to try it again. It’s been a couple years.

I’ve had two heavy handed margaritas so far, using Corralejo Respado. Considering pouring another.

Yuengling is one of the few things I miss about living on the East Coast

Haven’t tried that one.

Corralejo is great for Margaritas. Used it for years. I’ve since switched to Jimador Anejo, which is even better. Give it a try.

Good choice. Wheat ales are just getting better and better. I tried White Out from Anchorage Brewing recently, and that shit knocked my socks off.

So does the wine go in the rum and coke?
![]() 11/20/2015 at 21:41 |

I’m not sure I’d recommend it, but it’s very popular so what do I know.

Founders does a pretty good job. I like their porter.

Wine before dinner. Rum and coke for friday night wake up. Mostly a beer drinker but switching up for tonight. You got some tasty brews there!

I’ll look that one up next time I’m at the liquor store.
I had intended to pick up a 4-pack of Bell’s Two Hearted cans ‘cause they were $2 off this week but they were all out and this was next to the empty spot.
![]() 11/20/2015 at 21:50 |

I adore their Porter, and their Oatmeal Stout is also very good, but I’m not sure how often they bottle that (if ever, I’ve only had it on tap). This is the first thing I’ve had from them that I’ve really been meh on. I didn’t like Devil Dancer, either, but I just broadly don’t do IPAs so I can’t really blame the beer for that.

I was at Founder’s earlier for a work meeting. Had the Blushing Monk which I believe is the same tier as Backwood Bastard. It’s not as strong on taste as Backwood Bastard is and it’s a bit fruity but their alcohol content sneaks up on you (Blushing Monk 9.2%, Backwood 11.6%).

My current favorite beer, Dogfish Palo Santo Marron. It’s really amazing stuff, especially when you consider it’s technically malt liquor, since it isn’t hopped.
It’s a great rebuttal to the whole ever-escalating reckless hop usage thing that has dominated American brewing for the past few years. It’s incredibly complex, yet surprisingly easy-drinking, especially for a 12% ABV beer. It’s like a really unusual barleywine.
Get some of this. It’s awesome.

I have a friend who swears by Rubaeus/Blushing Monk. I’m generally not big on fruity beers, but Blushing Monk is really damn pleasant. I myself have been getting the Breakfast Stout the last couple times I was there, I’m a big fan of it.

I’ll have to do that. I’m a big fan of mezcal margaritas now too. A bit smokier, and so tasty.

it just ain’t Thanksgiving until someone breaks a pool cue over an uncle’s head.
Ha! We may be related.
I’m on the cheap stuff as usual. High Life, Lite, and a few Smith and Forge Ciders.
Thanksgiving should be plenty fun, My cousin is bringing a bunch of her home brews, My Uncle makes the best Bloody Marys you have ever had (the recipe is 8 or 10 ingredients), my Dad decided to assemble his Still and make his version of Bison Grass Vodka and then the usual suspects will be hanging out along with all of that. I’d say it’s 50/50 that anyone is going to be able to eat.

They don’t distribute west of the Rockies? Mississippi?
![]() 11/20/2015 at 22:17 |

Not sure about where they stop but it wouldn’t surprise me if Colorado has banned them to promote local beer. They’re a little sensitive here.

I love Cider. My local liquor store stopped carrying Green Goblin, and I’m super bummed about it.

BEER!
![]() 11/20/2015 at 22:29 |

Yeah. I’m a fan of Mezcal. I like the aged stuff though. The Mezcal Joven is a little harsh for my dainty tastes.
![]() 11/20/2015 at 22:31 |

Wow. Unhopped Dogfish. Everything I’ve ever tried from them has been a hop-fueled kick in the teeth, so I just haven’t tried any in years. I’ll give it a shot for sure.
![]() 11/20/2015 at 22:32 |

Yeah, I’m not an IPA guy either. And for a beer nerd in San Diego, saying that you don’t like IPAs will get you similar reactions to telling people you’re in the KKK.
![]() 11/20/2015 at 22:34 |

We get Bell’s here in San Diego. I’ve got a shit ton in the fridge right now.

Well done. I try to keep a decent selection on hand.

See, Grand Rapids is just a more progressive brewing city, ready to accept anyone regardless of weird, freaky beerophiliac preferences.

Lol. It’s usually the kind of shit show where we all only speak to each other afterwards because we’re family.
![]() 11/20/2015 at 22:38 |

Dammit. Well fine, I'm moving. Screw Denver, I'll take the beach any day and it can't possibly be that much more expensive to live there at this point!

Oskar Blues does a good job. Big fan of Mama’s Pils.
![]() 11/20/2015 at 22:39 |

Yeah, that’s how Portland is too. I actually prefer the scene there to San Diego, which is another unpopular opinion around here.
![]() 11/20/2015 at 22:40 |

Agreed. I brought back half a dozen cases with me to Colorado last time I drove to PA. Two were given away as gifts, and the rest we a nice treat while they lasted.

This is some quality stuff right here. Really rich even though it's low-fat. Worth the slightly high price.

I mean, they’re one of the breweries (along with Stone) that started the whole HOPS HOPS HOPS HOPS thing in the first place, and it kinda feels like this was done to show that they’re capable of more.
It’s a really exciting beer, since it’s a great showcase of what can be done with malt, and how underutilized the grain bill is when creating new beers these days. A lot of the time now it seems like the only consideration that goes into the malt selection is “how heavy do I want it and do I want it to be dark or light in color”.
You do get some of the flavors you would get from hops, the resiny, oily, herbal notes, but they all come from the wood.
Really, though, get this stuff.

According to the internet Square Mile shouldn’t be found in Denver either so I hope I’ll be able to find it again. It almost tastes like a sour, which I like, but mild enough to be drinkable.
![]() 11/20/2015 at 22:47 |

Their scotch ale is my favorite, everything else ties for second.

Sleeman Dark Chocolate Lager.

The IPL is their newest product, its an effort at blending the bolder, hoppier flavor of an IPA with the milder, refreshing character of a lager. It isn’t bad, but I have to say it’s far from my favorite. Their Traditional Lager and Black & Tan are going to remain my moderate priced go-tos.
![]() 11/21/2015 at 00:48 |
|
Yeah, the IPLs are getting pretty trendy around San Diego. I like ‘em. Gets the flavor of an IPA without the kick in the teeth. I mostly just miss having a cheap option that’s like a thousand times better than than Coors or Bud or Miller.

Just reading this makes me feel tired.
![]() 11/21/2015 at 00:50 |

Damn. Never heard of a chocolate lager. Where’s it made?
I’m a huge fan of Young’s double chocolate stout, so this intrigues me.
![]() 11/21/2015 at 00:57 |

The Scotch is good when it’s cold. It’s just a little heavy for my taste when it’s warm out, which is always here.

I feel like cider is kind of an unexplored area. The more breweries start to experiment, the more awesome shit is going to start coming out.
I homebrew, and my uncle has been promising me to hook me up with his grandpappy’s top-secret cider recipe from prohibition, but he hasn’t come through yet. I’m gonna have to kick his ass this Thanksgiving and get him to cough up the goods, because I can’t wait to try to make that shit.
![]() 11/21/2015 at 01:01 |

I will. I have made a mental note.
![]() 11/21/2015 at 01:02 |

Heat that shit up, dump in some Rumplemintz, and you’re in business.
![]() 11/21/2015 at 01:04 |

Lol. It’s so expensive here. It’s retarded. I pay $1200 a month for water.
![]() 11/21/2015 at 01:15 |

Its made in Guelph, Ontario. Its a seasonal brew, it has some coffee hint. So its like a mocha. Its really good.
![]() 11/21/2015 at 01:20 |

Ah. Probably not distributed down in the States.
![]() 11/21/2015 at 01:25 |

Correct, you can’t get Sleeman south of the border.

Too bad. I’d be all over that.

They have some great beers. My favorites are their Honey Brown lager, Cream Ale, and Fine Porter. I can get them year round. http://sleeman.ca/en/our-beers

Had a Bridgeport kingpin imperial red on nitro, it was very smooth and and quite good. Then I went to a Breakside wanderlust, which was full of flavor and just plain excellent.

There’s a restaurant by my old apartment that had a seasonal old fashion, where they substituted bourbon for mezcal, it was ridiculously good.

Nah. Everyone else brought booze too. The house is full of zombies this morning.
